FUE Hair Transplant: Method, Cost & Alternatives

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is the standard modern hair transplant: follicles are extracted one by one from the back of your head and implanted where you're thinning — no linear scar, minimal downtime. It's what 9 out of 10 clinics quote you by default, at $0.60–$1.50/graft in Turkey vs $3–$8 in the US.

How FUE works

FUE vs DHI vs FUT

MethodHow it differsScarRelative price

DHIImplanter pen combines channel + placement; denser packing possibleMicro-dots, invisible+10–30%
FUTStrip of scalp removed and dissected; older methodLinear scar on donor−20–40%

"Sapphire FUE" is standard FUE with a sapphire blade for the channels — sharper incisions, marginally faster healing, often the same price. Torn between the top two? The DHI vs FUE guide settles it.

What FUE costs

Same method, wildly different bills by country: a 3,000-graft FUE runs $9,000–$24,000 in the US, $7,500–$18,000 in the UK, and $2,000–$4,500 as an Istanbul package. Full breakdown on our cost page, Turkey specifics on the Turkey cost page, or estimate your own with the calculator.

Am I a candidate?

Good FUE candidates have stable donor hair at the back and sides and realistic goals for coverage. Diffuse thinning over the whole scalp, very early aggressive loss (early 20s), or a depleted donor area are reasons a good surgeon will say "not yet" — treat a clinic that never says no as a warning sign. A photo consultation settles it, and every clinic in our directory offers one free.

FUE questions, answered

Does FUE hurt?

The anesthetic injections sting for a minute; after that the procedure is painless — most patients watch films or sleep. Expect scalp tightness and mild soreness for a few days after.

How long until I look normal again?

Scabbing is visible for ~10 days; by two weeks you look like you have a short buzz cut. Office-job patients typically take 7–10 days off or work remote. The final result takes 12–18 months.

Is the result permanent?

Transplanted follicles come from DHT-resistant zones and generally last a lifetime. Your non-transplanted hair can keep thinning — most surgeons prescribe finasteride/minoxidil to protect it, or you may want a second session years later.

FUE or DHI — which should I pick?

For hairline and front density, DHI's implanter pen gives surgeons finer control; for large areas, standard FUE is faster and cheaper. In practice the surgeon's track record matters more than the acronym — compare before/afters, not brochures.
