Hair Transplant Before and After: How to Read Results

Before/after photos are the single most persuasive thing a clinic shows you — and the easiest thing to game. Here's the honest timeline, what a real result looks like at each stage, and how to spot the tricks.

The real timeline

StageWhat you look likeWhat's happening
Day 0–14Scabbing, redness, visible graftsGrafts anchoring; first wash ~day 3
Week 2–8Often worse than before ("shock loss")Transplanted hairs shed — normal and expected
Month 3–6Patchy early regrowthFollicles restart; density still misleadingly low
Month 6–12Visible improvementMost regrowth in; hair thickens and matures
Month 12–18The real "after"Final density and texture — judge results here

Any photo labeled "final result" earlier than 12 months undersells or oversells — ask when each shot was taken. The full week-by-week version lives in the recovery timeline.

Tell us roughly what you need. Michael reads every enquiry personally and replies with what our data shows on price, who operates, and what to ask before you pay a deposit. We don't forward your details to any clinic — no sales calls, no lead brokering.

Get told when a clinic's price or surgeon changes

We re-check every clinic we list against its own website. When one starts publishing a price, stops naming its surgeon, or changes what it charges, you hear about it. No recommendations, no sales calls, and we don't sell or share your address. Nothing is being sent yet — this is the list for when it is.

Before/after questions, answered

When do before/after photos actually show the final result?

12–18 months after surgery. Photos taken at 3–6 months undersell the result (regrowth is early); anything labeled 'final' before 12 months should make you skeptical.

How do I spot manipulated before/after photos?

Watch for different lighting, angles, haircuts or wet-vs-dry hair between the two shots, and hairlines that look painted. Honest clinics shoot both photos in the same studio setup and show multiple angles including the donor area.

How many photos should a clinic show me?

Ask for cases matching your hair type, loss pattern and graft count — not just their five best results. A clinic doing thousands of procedures a year should have dozens of comparable cases, including average outcomes.

Do results look worse before they look better?

Yes — transplanted hair sheds around week 2–3 ('shock loss'), and months 1–3 can look like nothing happened. Regrowth starts around month 3–4. Judge nothing before month 6.
